Studying English Philology

If you want to be well prepared to face the challenges of a highly competitive job market, study English Philology at Opole University. This is the place where students gain knowledge of language, literature, and culture and history of English-speaking countries as well as practical language skills at a high C1 proficiency level of CEFR for languages. The students may choose one of the following specialities:

  • English and Culture Studies

The undergraduates of English Philology with English and Culture speciality possess deepened knowledge of socio-cultural aspects of English speaking countries and can communicate in socio-cultural settings using English at an advanced C1 level of CEFR for languages. Undergraduates may seek employment requiring advanced command of English and knowledge of culture of English-speaking countries.

  • English and Spanish

The undergraduates of English Philology with English and Spanish speciality possess general knowledge of Spanish culture and can communicate in business settings using both foreign languages. Undergraduates may seek employment requiring work in two foreign languages (English C1 and Spanish B2) and knowledge of culture of English-speaking countries and Spanish speaking countries.

  • Translation Studies

Undergraduates of English Philology with Translation Studies speciality have general education in liberal arts. Their command of oral and written English is at C1 level of CEFR for languages. They possess deepened knowledge of translation and interpreting. Undergraduates may seek employment requiring advanced command of English and knowledge of translation theory.

  • Business English

The undergraduates of English Philology with Business English speciality are well prepared to face the challenges of a highly competitive job market. They learn to use English at C1 level of CEFR for languages. They also gain general knowledge of business world in order to communicate in business settings using English. Our students finish their studies with the ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams.  

  • English and Chinese

The undergraduates of English Philology with English and Chinese speciality are educated in liberal arts as well as gain knowledge of the literature, culture and general linguistics of English at C1 level of CEFR for languages. The university courses in Chinese language and culture guide students to their command of Chinese at A2 level. Undergraduates of Chinese speciality may seek employment requiring work in two foreign languages (English C1 and Chinese A2).

  • English and Czech

Undergraduates of English Philology with English and Czech speciality have general education in liberal arts, including general linguistic education. Their command of oral and written English is at C1 level of CEFR for languages while their command of Czech is at B2 level. They possess general knowledge of Czech culture and can communicate in business settings using both foreign languages. Undergraduates may seek employment requiring work in two foreign languages (English C1 and Czech B2) and knowledge of culture of English-speaking countries and Czech Republic.

What makes a difference at the University of Opole?

A professional team of academic teachers and lecturers supports and guides the undergraduates in their intellectual growth. The students are educated in modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology and modern computer room with several stands. Our library and the reading room offer access to an extensive collection of Anglo-Saxon literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching).

Student affairs, options for development, exchange and scholarship

Our students can enroll in a student exchange programme Erasmus+ offered by the University ofOpole, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language. Our partners are, among others, in Spain, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.

What are future career prospects after the studies?

Our students finish their studies with strong communication skills in English in writing and speaking, the ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams. They are well prepared for a career in, for example:

  • translation and interpretation bureau
  • public relations
  • publishing houses
  • advertising agencies
  • fundraising organizations
  • commercial, corporate or other business institutions
  • research institutes
  • many other fields that require good knowledge of English and liberal arts education.

The students interested in gaining teaching qualifications are advised to continue their MA studies with the teacher training specialization or enroll in additional teacher training post-graduate studies also offered by Opole University.

Exceptions from admission procedure

The laureates and finalists of the English Language Olympiad ("Olimpiada Języka Angielskiego") are admitted without recruitment procedures.
