STUDYING AT ENGLISH PHILOLOGY – PRACTICAL PROFILE

If you want to be well prepared to face the challenges of a highly competitive job market, study English Philology – practical profile of the undergraduate studies in English. The University of Opole in cooperation with local companies and business organisations has created an innovative programme that allows the undergraduates to link their academic growth with practical application of knowledge and skills in business settings. Students learn how to function in business contexts by developing their skills in analysis, planning, management, economics, or IT. They learn to use English in speech and writing at C1 level of CEFR for languages. Additionally, students develop a second foreign language at B2 level. The programme comprises several business subjects, such as project managmenet, change management, international commerce and trade law, business negotiations, or business relationships, to name a few. In semesters 4 and 5, students undergo an internship (a total of 960 hours) in enterprises, companies, corporations or institutions of their choice. In semesters 5 and 6, students work on a diploma paper embedded in their practical profile.

The classes are held from Monday through Friday. Some courses are conducted online, others are held in classrooms on the university site. All lecturers are available to students during their office hours to discuss academic issues relating to the courses.

Bachelor of Arts studies (undergraduate studies) finish with a BA defence and a BA degree. Undergraduate studies in English Philology – practical profile prepare candidates for graduate studies in a similar field.

WHAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE AT OPOLE UNIVERSITY?

A professional team of academic teachers supports and guides the undergraduates in their intellectual growth and language skills developement. Moreover, students learn directly from practitioners in the field of business and organisation. Students are educated in modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology. Our library and the reading room offer access to an extensive collection of literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching). Additionally, students participate in project workshops and take field visits in factories, companies or corporations to enrich their practical skills.

STUDENT MOBILITY PERSPECTIVES

Our students can enroll in an exchange programme Erasmus+ offered by the University of Opole, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language. Our partners are, among others, in Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Germany, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey and Italy. Students can also participate in study visits connected with the study program and do their internship abroad. (more information available at www.erasmus.uni.opole.pl).

FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS

Undergraduates of English Philology – practical profile can seek employment in small, medium, or large manufacturing companies, design and administrative entities, and private enterprises, corporations, business institutions, in planning, logistics, or production and enterprise project management divisions, especially where advanced command of general and business English is a standard job requirement. Our students finish their studies with strong communication skills in English at C1 level in writing and speaking, the knowledge of a second foreign language at B2 level, the ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams.
